HUBchari is run by Homedoor, certified NPO organization. Homedoor was established in 2010 to solve the social issue of homelessness. Our vision is to build a social structure with an Exit allowing people to get out of poverty.
The first thing we have worked on was to create jobs for people living on the street. According to the field research we have conducted, we found that approximately 70% of homeless people are good at fixing bikes.
This was the beginning of HUBchari, a share cycling service in Osaka. Share cycling service was quite new in Japan at that time. However, we thought and still believe that this project could solve Osaka's two big social issues at once, the issue of homelessness and the issue of illegally parked bikes.
Nowadays, the number of HUBchari stations as well as the number of users including foreign tourists have increased, and we have hired many homeless people. HUBchari has created jobs such as maintenance of bikes and replacing batteries. The revenue of HUBchari is used for their salaries and operation of the organization and the shelter.
