In the Edo period(1603 - 1867), Osaka was called the “Osaka 808 bridges”. This did not mean there were actually 808 bridges in Osaka, but since Osaka had so many bridges, a bridge could be found everywhere. The actual number of bridges in Osaka at that period was only about 200 bridges.
Among those bridges, just 12 bridges was built by the government. The rest of bridges were built by the citizens themselves without government support. This momentum of the citizens’ passion for bridges to improve the city is the reason why Osaka was called as Osaka 808 bridges.
